Experience one of the most spectacular floral displays in the gardening world with Ceanothus Concha. Often regarded as one of the best California Lilacs available, this vigorous evergreen shrub is a riot of colour in late spring. Before the flowers open, the plant is covered in attractive reddish-maroon buds, which burst into dense, spherical clusters of the most intense, deep indigo-blue flowers. With its arching branches and small, dark green crinkled leaves, 'Concha' provides excellent year-round structure and becomes a magnet for bees and butterflies during its blooming peak.
Key Features:
-
Intense Indigo Blooms: Known for having some of the darkest and most vibrant blue flowers of any Ceanothus variety.
-
Pollinator Powerhouse: The nectar-rich blossoms are a favourite for bees, providing a vital food source in late spring.
-
Evergreen Structure: Small, glossy dark green leaves provide a consistent, lush backdrop through all four seasons.
-
Arching Habit: Features graceful, sweeping branches that look stunning when grown against a sunny wall or fence.
-
Tough & Resilient: Once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant and thrives in sunny, sheltered positions.
Care Instructions:
Ceanothus Concha performs best in a position of full sun and requires well-drained soil; it will not tolerate waterlogged ground. It is ideally suited to a sheltered spot, such as against a south or west-facing wall, to protect it from cold, drying winds. Water regularly during the first growing season until the root system is fully established. This shrub requires minimal pruning; simply trim back any wayward branches immediately after flowering has finished in early summer to maintain its shape. Avoid cutting back into old, woody stems as the plant may not regrow from old wood.
